Concrete After Lightning evokes a summer day in New York: the sun beats down on the scorching asphalt, then suddenly a thunderstorm arrives. Lightning strikes the concrete walls, where a few blades of grass grow, and the cool rain evaporates in an instant on the still-warm asphalt, as the sun shines again. It's a welcome relief on muggy days, amidst electrical discharges, downpours, and steam.
Founder D.S. explains that the after-rain scent is due to geosmin, a molecule produced by bacteria in the soil. In the woods, it gives off a damp, fresh scent, while in the city, it blends with the smell of asphalt and concrete suddenly cooled by the rain. The candle is constructed simply: air, rain, steam, and the weeds growing in the cracks of New York.
